Microsoft Office has expired! What do I do now?

Previously, the IT Team installed the last stand-alone version of Microsoft Office (version 2016). Up until recently, this version has worked fine for most of you. However, the license for Microsoft Office 2016 is no longer supported and has now expired! So what does that mean for you?

To utilize the Microsoft Office suite, you must upgrade to the most recent version of Microsoft Office (Office365). To do this, please follow these instructions:

  • Go to: office365.ncsu.edu.
  • To install the latest Microsoft Office version, you must sign in with your NCSU Unity ID and password. (This means the local IT cannot install it for you since we will never ask for your password)
  • Choose one of these two options for working with Office 365:
    • Option 1 – To download and install MS Office Applications and work from your local computer. To do this, select the “Install Office button in the top left-hand corner,”
    • Once the installation has completed you will find the following applications have been installed: MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook, One Note, Teams, and Access (for Windows only)
    • Option 2 – To work in the cloud without downloading and installing MS Office: Be aware that you’ll be using limited versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
    • Note- There are applications available for use when working in the cloud, i.e., MS Vizio, Sway, Forms, and PowerBI (Windows only)
  • Should you run into any issues or need any assistance with installing/upgrading to the latest version of Microsoft Office (MS Office 365) please do not hesitate to contact us one of these ways:
    • Visit us in person with your device at the Poole IT Service desk located in Nelson suite 2400
    • E-mail pcom_support@ncsu.edu

  • NOTE: G Suite is the university’s primary collaborative application suite. OIT recommends that you use G Suite for collaboration instead of Office 365.
